Cabbages & Roses visits the MODA Country Fair

September 23, 2011

It was with great pleasure that Cabbages & Roses were invited to participate in the Moda ‘blog tour’. Christina was invited to take part in the question and answer section of this world wide journey. We would like to thank Cheryl and Lissa for their interesting questions, and Christina for her interesting answers!

What’s your favorite fair food? If not fair, then just food!

The delicious roasted almonds.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Delicious roasted almonds.

What’s on your bucket list?

To paint a picture in oils.

To cross Russia in the Winter on the trans Siberian express.

To own a house overlooking the sea—any sea.

To produce a book about the life of Cabbages & Roses.

What inspires your work?

 Beautiful houses

Beautiful clothes.

The Countryside.
The past.

Women—Especially those who appreciate our style.

Tell us about the time you entered in a fair…

Our only fair is the Moda fair. Kate—my daughter—and I felt like new girls-inexperienced and rather nervous. We were overwhelmed by the scale of the exhibition but immediately, the lovely exhibitors and all the Moda staff very soon made us feel welcome and very special.

State Fairs have become known for what they can FRY?  What would you fry?

Nothing, if I can help it.

What movie do you watch again & again?

The Railway Children, Home Alone 1, Little Women, 39 Steps, The Gathering Storm, The Duchess.

Who would play you in a made for TV Lifetime movie?

Whoopie Goldberg.

What’s on your nightstand?

Coco Chanel by Justine Picardie, a copy of my first book ‘Vintage Chic’ newly published, a vase of sweet peas, a large wireless, Vintage china candle holder and matches (in case of power cut), lavender essence and old book of prayers.

Do you sing when no one else is listening? If so, what is the song or artist?

Yes—anything with a tune.

Tell us about your pet?

Walter Gilbert Strutt—A Jack Russell who looks like a cross between a fox and a Corgie. He was given to me by a customer and is wholly delightful, gentle, loving, and rather ugly.

What do you wish people would ask about you more?

Nothing.

How many quilts have you made?

Not one.

If you could be any age again for one week, what age & why?

56 and three quarters – I can’t think of a better time in my life (so far)

What shows do you TiVo?

I have no idea what TiVo is so I don’t TiVo any shows.

Are you related to anyone famous? Or infamous?

Pope Paul III who was born Alessandro Farnese in 1474, became Pope in 1534 until 1549. Unfortunately, he employed Nepotism to advance the power and fortunes of his family. Sadly, his palace and the power and fortunes of the family did not last the next six generations so all we have left is history.

If you could go back in time and talk to yourself at the age of 12, what would it be & why?

Trust your instinct – it is there for a reason.

What question would you liked to be asked?

May I give you a lovely house overlooking the sea, health, wealth and happiness for as long as you live?

Oh yes, please do.

xx CHRISTINA

Our lovely shop in Japan…

Cabbages & Roses Shop visited by

British Minister of State, Jeremy Brown

Last Monday, Jeremy Brown, the British Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth office, visited our little shop in Daikanyama. He was visiting Tokyo in the wake of the earthquake in March, which caused such devastation in Japan. His mission, organised by the British Embassy in Tokyo, was to investigate British companies who, in spite of the unfortunate events, have managed to thrive. Cabbages & Roses opened as scheduled one week after the earthquake and in the face of adversity, has enjoyed much success and was singled out as one such enterprise. He was proudly received by our ‘Tokyo Roses’ and enjoyed a little patch of England in the Japanese streets. Commenting on the authenticity and old fashioned Britishness of the brand, he wished us all much luck for our future with our Japanese partners.

‘We Love Linen’ with Selvedge

July 5, 2011

When Christina and I heard about Selvedge’s ‘I love linen’ evening in the beautiful 17th century Fenton House in Hampstead, we couldn’t resist a visit!  As we walked up to the house through the beautifully kept gardens, we spotted our India Rose tablecloths on the tables laden with strawberries and champagne… and we knew it was going to be a lovely evening.

We listened to a wonderful talk by Elizabeth Baer on the French antique linens she has collected over the years from France, and were delighted to be able to have a closer look at particular pieces – from delicately hand embroidered napkins for young lady’s trousseaux, to red and blue ticking blankets for oxen in the fields. We listened to the stories behind the linens Elizabeth has collected in France and about the different uses her clients have for the textile she brings back to the UK. We were transported right back to hazy summer lunches when shown large linen squares that were historically used as portable lunchboxes in France; bread and cheese and drinks would be placed in the centre of the square and wrapped up in the linen to be carried easily to work. The linen would then be unfolded at lunch and used as a tablecloth whilst they ate – it was agreed that the French have always known how to dine in style! I then got lost in an imaginary world of linen dressed trestle tables under the dappled shade of trees and wished for a French summer…

The evening was rounded off by an opportunity to have a closer look at the antique linens and a chance to enjoy the house and grounds. On the way home Christina and I also took the chance to explore the surrounding area of Hampstead (we shot our A/W2006 catalogue here), well worth a look at the stunning houses and old fashioned streets if you are ever in the area!

We love the beauty and functionality of linen here at Cabbages & Roses, and understand its timeless appeal for everyday living for both fashion and the home. We have a beautiful collection of our linens on our website (www.cabbagesandroses.com) as well as limited printed vintage linen sheets in our shops, not to be missed!

Diary of a Cabbage – Christina

June 24, 2011

Because we at Cabbages & Roses are rather getting into this blog malarchy, we thought it might be interesting to have a monthly spot called ‘This week I wore…’

My turn first, and this is the week that I had to leave sunny England to go to Tokyo and a round of parties (well, two parties) celebrating Cabbages & Roses first shop opening  in Japan.   This was sadly postponed from March when the events were cancelled because of the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

My iPhone weather department tells me that it will be both sunny and hot and rainy and cold.  I HATE PACKING. Always short of space, and always pack totally unsuitable clothing – we’ll see how appropriate (or not) it was.

Saturday morning, June 4th, 6am.

Not sure how to make the flash not work – feel it will be a little feature in this particular blog.

Black jeans from Jigsaw, extremely comfortable and stretchy, flat Marc Jacobs shoes (from TheShop at Bluebird), Cabbages & Roses swirly hem coat (available next winter) so useful, cool, floaty and washable.   Stripe cabbages & Roses t shirt casually tossed around the shoulders!

Flew British Airways (I LOVE British Airways – so cosy and safe and English and a bit like the BBC Radio 4) to Tokyo.

Sunday (I think)

Dinner with friends at ‘the best chinese restaurant in Tokyo’ – luckily one floor below my bed in the Hotel Okura.   I forgot to take a photograph of me wearing what I wore, so here we are next morning, photographed without me in it.

Patched Vintage denim jacket from Cabbages & Roses and red and white gingham dress with white long sleeve t shirt dress underneath. All of the above available next summer from Cabbages & Roses. (note to self: find red gingham)

Monday

Meetings at Innocent offices, a visit to Daykanyama and our own little shop.

Luckily a sunny day (so far) I am wearing the white long side button skirt, white crumpled jersey plain empire top and swirly panel cotton coat.   The skirt available now from Cabbages & Roses – the fabric a random mixture woven together, of various weaves of white cotton with the occasional blue and grey stripe – I found this fabric in Paris in a heap on the floor of an exhibition, it was meant as a sample of all the fabrics the mill was able to produce, I asked for them all to be woven together for us and here it is. The coat is available in Linen this summer, and in the button skirt fabric next summer.

Shoes – as always white plimsolls from Cabbages & Roses. They need to be washed, but not sure how to explain to the hotel laundry that they can go into the washing machine and forgot to pack more… An absolutely entirely Cabbages & Roses ensemble!

Tuesday

Meetings and looking at a new department store.   Not sure what the weather is doing as can’t open window, and don’t believe iPhone. Grey sky. So, blues.

I am wearing the blue amos dress worn over blue stripe t shirt with kat crop jeans (can’t do up button so relying on zip!), and for further distraction a stripe navy&white t shirt and blue stripe t shirt (from autumn winter collection) with the blue stripe woven scarf from spring summer around my shoulders. Another absolutely entirely Cabbages & Roses ensemble.

Wednesday

Party at British Embassy, so wore Christina dress – lovely floaty chiffon affair with animal print – it is still undecided whether the creatures on this fabric are monkeys, dogs or foxes – it was originally called the monkey dress.   Designed to wear to Kate-my-daughter-Strutt’s wedding last August, and it turned out to be the most perfect garment for so many occasions, especially when ‘teamed’ with a worn denim jacket and of course plimsolls – luckily a new pair was purchased from Cabbages & Roses Tokyo shop! It survived the two parties of the day, and was photographed substantially by the 40 journalists who attended our Embassy Party!

Thursday

Hooray! No parties, no particular engagements, just a tour of potential department stores that will carry our delicious brand. I wore favourite Ralph Lauren baggy jeans (fashionably fraying and torn in just the right places) with heavenly Frances shirt dress, with white swirly panel coat (SS11) – and of course, white plimsolls.

Friday

One hour’s sleep then bus to airport still wearing, I am afraid, yesterday’s clothes! Due to time differences and being in a complete sleepless spin, turns out that I am still wearing this lot another day later when I arrive in England – can’t begin to work out how many hours the poor Frances dress has been on my body, it has certainly travelled many miles and crossed several time zones.

Next month, another Cabbage will reveal their weeks’ worth!!
